St Francis (Sint Fransiscus) holding the infant Christ Child gazing at the Virgin who appears from the clouds in the upper left, the head of a monk shows at the lower right. Resembles a similar painted composition by Faccini in a private collection in Modena. The original drawing is in Paris, at the Louvre (La Vierge confiant l’Enfant Jésus à saint François d’Assise INV 6277, Recto).
On verso collectors’ marks: Karl Jacob Mayer (1894-1976) [L. 5100] and another unidentified mark.
On the top right corner, in pen and brown ink: “XX”.
Faccini was born in Bologna. He began as an artist late in his life, when he was about 30, training in the Carracci Academy till around 1594, when Faccini opened his own school. Only extant dated painting is the ‘Martydom of St Lawrence’, S. Giovanni in Monte, Bologna, 1590. He painted and engraved in the Carracci manner, as also this impression shows.
Etching on laid paper with margins; plate mark: 360 x 259 mm, total: 411 x 302 mm; some foxing, slightly tired impression; crease in the middle due to horizontal folding; some dirt under the belt of the Saint; traces of previous mounting on verso. Bartsch XVIII.272.1.
