“While in the previous table [XL] Piranesi presents – according to a criterion of philological reconstruction – the cross-section of the three sepulchral rooms, purging it of any mention of the buildings that in modern times had taken advantage of the walls of the ancient burial to build above and inside, in this plate he intends to illustrate the same monument in the manner of a landscape view. He consequently adapts the technical-linguistic choices to the subject. He uses multiple etching shades to organize the different spatial planes of the perspective, and intervenes with burin retouches especially in the foregrounds, on the masonry in the center, and in the lower left corner of the plate, with the aim of giving the sensitive image chiaroscuro vibrations. The highlights come from the coverings with saving paint strokes.[…].” (Giovanna Scaloni, ICG, Rome).

Translated title: External view of the three large tomb chambers thought to belong to the Household of Augustus / Buitenaanzicht van de drie grote grafkamers die behoorden tot het huishouden van Augustus.
