Draped woman adjusting a garment (diplax) on her left shoulder; after an antique statue identified as Diana. According to the British Museum, the statue is of the same type as the statue known as the Louvre’s ‘Diane de Gabies’, found in 1792, and which for a while was associated with the work of Praxiteles.

Signed and numbered on the ground: “FP B / 64”, FP monogrammed and the B stands for “Bergognone”.

Inscribed in pencil on the bottom right margin: “Diana”.

From ‘Segmenta Nobiliarum Signorum et Statuarum’, a series of 101 etched plates (frontispiece and 100 illustrations) representing statues from Rome, first published in Rome in 1638, and reprinted five times before the end of the seventeenth century.

On verso, on the bottom right corner collector’s mark: “P” in black (stencilled?). Date of publishing 1638.

Etching on laid paper; plate mark: 219 x 130 mm, total: 295 x 181 mm; despite the damp stain affecting the bottom margin, in good condition. Le Blanc 38-137.
