The investiture of Maurice with the Order of the Garter on the 4th of February 1613. In the main hall of the Binnenhof in The Hague, a herald puts the garter on Maurits in the presence of the English ambassador, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, the members of the States General and many other guests.
Smaller plate after the broader original by Frisius, published in 1613. The text below explains the lettering in the print.
Used as plate in vol. 2 of Isaac Commelin’s “Wilhelm en Maurits van Nassau, Princen van Orangien…”, published by Jan Jansz. in 1651.
Etching on laid paper, without margins; total: 163 x 210 mm; watermark: coat of arms; foxing, edges reinforced with tape on verso. Muller 1290. After a print by Simon Frisius (Muller 1289).
