Buleus, Justus
Amsterdam, Casparus Lootsman and Jacobus Konynenberg, [early 18th century].
An imposing Dutch Reformed house-postil in a remarkable contemporary blind-tooled calf binding over wooden boards, retaining both original brass clasps. A highly evocative example of early eighteenth-century Dutch domestic devotional culture, combining a substantial vernacular sermon collection with an unusually archaic and decorative binding. Rare book, only three copies in STCN (ID: 096490454)
Bound in a striking contemporary blind-tooled calf binding over thick wooden boards, richly decorated with multiple fillets and ornamental floral rolls surrounding a central panel. The binding retains two substantial (later?) brass clasps with engraved concentric-circle decoration. Raised bands to spine. The use of wooden boards and metal clasps deliberately continues an older binding tradition and gives the volume a particularly imposing appearance. Large quarto. Full leather binding worn but highly attractive and substantially preserved. Considerable wear and losses to the leather along the spine and joints, with the sewing structure locally exposed; corners and extremities rubbed. Both brass clasps are preserved. Interior generally good for a heavily used devotional volume, with occasional spotting, browning, staining and signs of use. Interior with some pencil remarks and underlining. Front has an overlapping piece of leather, most likely covering the former VOC vignet.
Dutch Protestant collection of sermons by Justus Buleus, formerly minister of the Word of God and sub-regent of the theological college at Leiden. The title states that this is the “last edition”, corrected from numerous printing errors, with the Biblical references adapted to the new Dutch translation, and with short prayers added after each sermon by V.C.D., minister at Leeuwarden. Title-page with a large woodcut printer’s device.
Provenance: With handwritten (yet unreadable) name on flyleaf with date juli 1949, van jaq.
